Whats the deal here! T5's and Coraline
Has anyone else noticed that T5 lit tanks have a lack of coraline?
It turns white or very very light colored but continues to grow? When I had my tank with all T5s my coraline all bleached and turned very white/light colored but continued to grow. No I DID PHOTOACCLIMATE my tank, I only added 1 T5 bulb PER MONTH... It took me 4 months to acclimate everything, with no stress on corals, just coraline... so why?

I always heard that the light isn't really what matters with coralline, but calcium is what your looking for.

Shawnts106 ... I'm curious, what type of calcium supplements are you dosing, and brand?
Thanks |

If you went from lower intensity light to the T5's it would not be that unusual to have the coraline bleach out at first.

I have been using B-Ionics for over a year. I love it, and my Ca and Alk stay perfectly balanced.
Alk is always between 2.5 to 3meq/L and Ca is always between 460-500 It swings depending on not often I do waterchanges. Grim, I went from VHO's to T5s But as I said, I only put on one T5 bulb PER MONTH. My photoperiod with the T5s was 8 hrs. My friend also had the same problem.

Thanks.
When I switched from VHO to T5 after tranferring to new tank, my Coralline was starting to grow really well. I siwtched from B-ionic to the two part solution 2 part and recently noticed that growth had really slowed. I have been using the two part solution for about 2 or 3 months. I switched to HQI + T5 not too long ago and noticed some bleaching of the coralline on the top rocks, which is expected. But T5 wasnt what was slowing my Coralline. I think it's the calcium, or rather lack of anything else in the calcium. I believe that the B-ionic also has some supplements besides calcium. I have switched back to using some of the B-ionic but it has only been a few days. Gonna try a little bit of the Seachem reef calcium. |

are you keeping your magnesium levels in line? You need the magic three all in check to get good coraline = calcium, alk, and magnesium
