Question some ?s about a diatom filter

does any1 have a d-1 diatom filter?
i need some help im not really understanding how it works.It tells you youhave to fill a contaner with water fri=om the tank and put both the intake and exaust in side it and let it filter that was and then add some of the diatom powder.I just dont get how this is going to help my tank if its only filtering that small portion of water?
