how long for mh bulbs to cool down

i got new bulbs and the ones that came with mine i have no idea how old they are and i would like to change them
is around 20 mins or ok to let cool or should i wait longer i can't do it before they come on cause i am at work

20 minutes should be ok. Just be careful and use a towel (not your hands), especially when installing new bulbs, and especially if they are the small double ended variety.

why do i have to use a rag when i touch the bulb even when its not hot some bulbs they say to only touch the ends

The oil from your fingers will rub off on the bulb. This will cause that area of the bulb to heat up more and if there is enough heat it will crack.

This is especially true for the double ended small variety, but oil on your hands ends up on the quartz tube, causing uneven heating, and potentially causing it to weaken and then shatter. By using a clean towel or being very careful you avoid those issues.

My old 175w's where cool to the touch in about 10 minutes (Single ended). I never worried about touching the single ended bulbs, I just made sure I cleaned them off with vinegar after installation.
