1st Attempt At Sump Design

I'm looking at replacing my sump under my 58g Oceanic tank. My current sump is the Amiracle Maxi-Reef 100. I would like to run a fugi again. So this is my first shot at using Sketchup. I would like your imput on what should be changed.

My $0.02
I would not have that 12" baffle all the way to the top...leave 1" from the top...just in case the other chamber fills up.
The other thing is I think the water flow for your fuge might be a bit fast .....

I thought about that too. I'll drop it down a few inches. It doesnt need to be that high anyways. I can also split the water return to the sump with a vavle on the fugi side to slow the flow down.

Personally I use an under over under baffle system for air bubbles. Works better for my setup at least.

Is 5" deep enough for the skimmer? I'm pretty sure my RS-80 wants 6-8". And having your return section only 4" deep means you are going to be topping off a lot--are you going to have an auto top off? Or were you planning to have the water level higher, in which case the skimmer won't be happy with a fluctuating water level?

I personally don't like having the skimmer after the 'fuge, as I don't want to be skimming out 'pods before they can make it to the tank.

I set my sump up with a center return section, which the 'fuge and skimmer section both feed. My drain line is tee'd so that some flow goes to the 'fuge and most to the skimmer. The other way I considered doing it was to have the flow go Skimmer-Fuge-Return. This way means more flow through the 'fuge, which may or may not be desirable depending on what you are keeping in the 'fuge.

Melev's site is a great resource for sump designs: www.melevsreef.com

Oh....make sure your chamber for skimmer and return is big enough to accomdate other pumps or skimmer as well....trust me it is a PITA when comes to upgrade time....

Yeah, I agree about not running your baffle to the top. Mine will overflow occasionally if I run filterfloss because I have the baffle going to the top. If the baffle were a few inches from the top, the occasional overflow would simply bypass

You should consider putting the skimmer before the fuge that way you get the full effect of the fuge.
