New User/New Tank Enthusiast-To-Be

Hey everyone.
I'm new to ReefCentral and I was referred here by a real life friend of mine, invertebrator, another person new to the reef life.

I'm currently attending college, but I need something that I can maintain or have my family maintain easily during the year while I'm away.

My friend recommends that I get a 5-7 gal tank and get it going, perhaps I can do that during Christmas. Any suggestions on how I should start off, what I should put in (besides the sand, live rock, etc) or otherwise?

I'm looking for suggestions and also for friends here, so leave whatever comments you will!

Thanks!
-Ryan

This should answer all of your questions.

Couldn't you just keep a nano tank in your dorm? Expecting someone who is not into the hobby to take care of your tank is setting yourself up for heartache. They just would not have the vested interest like you would.
Good luck and welcome.
Where is Duanesburg?
P.S. read all you can by WATERKEEPER, if you dare.

Hello Ryan, and welcome to the site I'm sure you'll find all you need to know here. How long is christmas vacation.Setting up a new tank takes time, water changes, water testing and monitering.Rock and sand are about it.A nano would be a good choice for a small tank. It's got the wall in the back with 3 comparments.I have a 6 gallon in my sons room.Well he does but I take care of it.Do you want a reef or fish only tank.

It's about 20 minutes from Albany New York. It's okay, it's not the first time that question has been asked. XD

I probably could keep one in my room, but I'm not sure how the whole space issue is going to work out.

I was thinking about doing a reef, but eventually getting some clownfish or something.

I'm closely watching my friend invertebrator's tank, he started with some live rock and a damselfish, and he bought some snails yesterday to eat the algae that is forming, so he is almost finished cycling, from my knowledge. I would probably do something along the lines of that, but eventually get some clownfish and maybe other species when it was finished cycling.

I don't know, what else is compatible with clownfish?

My sons nano is a reef it does pretty well.Mostly softies.I am waiting on a 18 watt retro kit for it.They are pretty easy to maintain.Take out the bioballs put in some LR rubble and add a little media (carbon phos pad etc..).Some people even make many fuges in them.I still need to change out the pump to one with a little more performance. They have a thread on here just for nano's check it out.

I wish I knew what half of that meant!

Oh well. I'll probably post some more stuff when I'm actually READY to make a tank. The idea is still lingering in my head, making sure it's not just a fad of the moment thing with me.

Ryan,

If you dare then this should help get you started The New Tank Thread. I would also drop in on our Nano Reef Forum for tips on how to run a small tank as my thread is mainly geared to larger tanks. However the basics still apply.
