Measure wattage from wall socket?
Is there any way to measure the amount of wattage being used via the wall socket without a Kill-a-Watts ?
I'd like to find out if my 175W ballasts are really 175W or not. Thanks

You could take an extension cord, cut off the outer jack and use a clamp on multimeter to measure the amperage and voltage of the hot line. Then do some math watts = volts * amps.
You can use a non clamp on meter but you'll have to cut the hot wire in half and hook up the probes. This gets more dangerous as your dealing with an exposed wire.

Hmm... ok.
I wasn't sure if the good 'ol physics P=IV rule really applied to real life or was just a mathematical model. Thanks for the help
