Filtration with no sump?

Hi, I have a 55G tank. Is being running for a year with minor problems. I never used a sump or refugium. Just a hang on aqua c remora. What can I use for filtration? a canister filter? I am looking for something effective.

Adding a caniser filter wouldn't help much and I think they are a waste in my opinion. I would look into adding a HOB fuge which can be made out of a hang on power filter. Check out this link:

Yea, as long as you buy a large powerfilter.
