Heat
if i run 1 250 mh pendant over a 40br will i need a chiller? Also will this be enough light for any corals or will it be to much light for some corals?

yes, a chiller, or some fans blowing across the top of the tank or sump.. that creats lots of evaporation, so auto top off becomes a factor. I have seen some beautifull reef tanks that are shallow like your tank will be lit up with T5's and there gorgeous. I have a 240 gallon tank with 4 250's. If i didnt have temp controll it would over heat, and this is in a cool basement in colorado.

i use a 250w over my tank with some fans and temperature stays b/t 78- 82. no chiller. no need.

I've got a 250w in a canopy over my 29 and rarely have heat issues.
