I'm very happy with my chiller. I live in new mexico and it tends to get really hot here. The Chiller I have is pretty much dummy proof, its very quiet, works like champ, and it was very cost effective. I don't know whats better about it...the way it works or what I paid for it

JBJ Chillers hands down.
I have a 1/5 on my tank in the living room. The megaflow overflow on the tank is louder then the chiller. Even with the tv off you can barely hear the chiller kick on. |

Aqualogic makes drop in's ... not very quiet.
Current USA ... not very quiet. Tradewinds, I think, also have drop in's ... I heard that these arent the quietest either. Universal Marine ... not very quiet and big $$$$ So, atleast that gives you three that arent among the quietest chillers. The larger you go within any brand and, usually, the louder they get. Common sense but just something else to consider. |

So are there any brands that are known to be quiet?

I think that the JBJ's are supposed to be quiet and maybe the PCI's too. But I dont think either one makes a drop in.
Then again, seems that when somebody mentions their chiller being quiet, it usually turns out that they have a small model like the 1/10 hp or 1/5 hp JBJ or PCI which is very popular. Still, those brands seem to be mentioned as the quietest. Of the 4 I mentioned, If I had to make a guess, I would probably bet on the Tradewinds being the quietest. They use a scroll compressor which is usually quieter. But that would just be a relative comparison with the other 3. Maybe consider changing thoughts to a flow through JBJ (or PCI) for meeting your noise level requirements. |
