Size + Length = Time

I see a lot of beautiful tanks with a variety of fish and coral. And I just want to know a few things.

1. What was the longest time you've had a fish and what size did you get it ?( before and after pic if you have)

2. What was the longest time you've had a coral and what size did you get it ?( if you have pic)

3. If you dont have that fish/coral now ,what happend ?

In my own tanks, the longest Ive had a fish thus far is going on 5 years for a percula. She has been through power outtages, freezes, a couple of moves- and still chugs along. I dont have any good pics of her- sorry.

A shop I worked at for about 5 years had a pair of Skunk Clowns that we had kept in our display tank for 15+ years. We also had an Anularis Angel for about 20 years, who was already a full adult when we got her. We estimated her to be about 24 years old when she finally died (of old age presumably).

At that same store, they got a leather coral the same year as the Anularis. I fragged it several times because it was simply outgrowing its 180g tank. The store has since closed, but a local reefer was able to get the mother colony, and several of us still have frags. That coral has been in captivity for over 20 years now.

Mother colony circa 2002 (within a year of that photo it touched the top of the tank, the front and back of the glass, and covered about 1/3 of the total tank footprint) :

Percula.. It was my first reef tank fish. I bought it in 2000 from Petco. It just died this year. Its a shame too. It was in a 38 gallon reef all its life and didnt survive the conversion from the 38 to the 210.

Wow, that is awesome 5 yrs+ concidering all its been thought. Thats one stronge percula.

15+ for some skunk clowns and a Anularis for 20+ that is just what this hobby is all about ( How long !!!!!)

And as far as the leather... that thing is huge , taking up 1/3 of a tank is total domination. Imagine if it was in a 300+ tank with more room to grow.......wow.

And thanks for your reply...awesome

Pmolan.

Sorry about the percula. Nice going from a 38 ( your 1st) to a 210 how do you like it? I wanted to step up to a 180 but since I started SPS it hasn't been working out the way I wanted it too. So untill I get better the 180 is on hold. and thanks for your reply too.

I know there are a lot of others out there ,let see them and hear abouth them.

It is soooo much easier to maintain. Less fluctuation of temps, salinity etc... I havent done a water change in 5 months. I ended up running pvc to a basement sump with all sorts of things maintaining the system.

I haven't been in the hobby nearly long enough to compare with these others, but there's a fish store in Orlando called Sea in the City that just got a mated pair of maroon clownfish that ORA retired that are 30 years old. I wish I'd thought to take a picture. The female is probably a good 6".

loosecannon,

Nice , 5 years thats good and when you start fragging, it puts you in a whole new ballgame ,you make money and continue to buy more pieces and then the hobby becomes even more fun.I can wait to get to the fragging stage.

Thanks

Thanks jzdad,
Yes, that is a green efflo, too.
I've changed the tank around them. From 120g to 200g, and now 300g (5'x4'x2' tall).
I bought them at one of my LFS in 2004.

I've had my A. Frenatus for over 13 years now. She was about an inch ling and had all three stripes when I bought her when I was 16. Not much later did I acquire a LTA for her that is still alive and kicking. She now lives in the LTA with her young boyfriend and has just started spawning this year. Shes laying eggs pretty regularly now.

I also have a frag from the very first coral I bought 14 years ago. It was a Sarco, lived until last year when I shipped everything (including the clown and LTA) from CT to Florida. The Sarco actually survived the trip just not much longer in the tank. The baby is still alove and kicking though. After 14 years the mother never grew much, and i'm seeing that the same is true for the frag too. It's been in the same spot for more than a year and is still the size of a marble. :P

Deepsea,

Wow, thats a beautiful thing to be able to make your tank to suit your coral. A real way to know that there is absolute growth. It could be me but there are very few LFS in my area of NY with a nice selection of SPS they have loads of softies, lps and polyps. So I have to join a local reef club so I can swap frags and learn more about reefing because you can never learn enough about this hobby.

loosbrew,

13 years, wow thats like having a teenager .Thats got to be amazing when you have a part of the ocean confined to a small area in which they do what is natural to them (spawning, and regularly) thats fantastic!!!

Sorry about the lost from the move but a piece from the 14 year old mother is awesome and maybe it has some of its mother traits
and dont want to monopolize like some corals . Just get comfortable and just maintain ...got a picture?..............Thanks!

Absolutely! I never questioned why it never grew much. I've been able to raise many "difficult" corals in a variety of conditions and that one just never did much I was just happy it was happy enough to go on. Priscilla & Elvis (the clown and LTA) are the reasons I'm still in the hobby now. I wish I had known earlier on how dedicated I would be to them, I have to say they did put quite a hindrance on many opportunities I've passed up over the years. It all worked out though
