Expanding my community tank... selecting new fish?
I'm looking for recommendations for additons to my tank.
I'd like a few (3-5) very small, colorful schooling fish. Preferrably peaceful and reef-safe because I have a few soft corals. My tank is currently home to 2 ocellaris, one royal gramma, one coral beauty (who just got out of fish-jail), an anemone and a peppermint shrimp, plus assorted crabs and snails for cleanup. Any suggestions? Kind regards, Rusty |

If you add 3-5 more fish, it sounds like a lot of fish for a 55.

Physically speaking, he's fine. He's only got 4 fish in there now. Is there a skimmer?
Small colorful fish: tailspot blenny, firefish, flasher wrasses, bartlett anthias.

Crabbs, you're right... I'm leaning more towards three... but I'm hoping for something very small.
![]() SDguy... yes, a skimmer, a bunch of live rock and places to hide, DSB. Lots of flow, alternating directions on a timed controller. Tank is up going on a year now. Most critters have been there a while. Anything new going in the tank gets locked up in jail (into the Q-tank) for a minimum of 4 weeks. I'm kind of hoping for the tetras or cherry barbs of the marine world. Colorful, friendly, schooling. |

Then some of the small cardinals would be your best bet...

A good bet would be several highfin redstriped gobies, stonogobiops nematodes. They hang close to each other and create a lot of stripes in a given area. Cryptic at first, in a tank where there are no aggressors against them, they get cheeky.
You're right: you keep the adult sizes down in a 55 and you can house quite a few fish. None of these exceed 2". ![]() and they have very little height or depth.

Don't forget the classic: green chromis. You can get them smallish, and they tend to school.
