What goes in a Refugium?

I was going to put sand and cheeto in there. What else do you all put in there? A rock or two? some snails? something to keep the sand sifted?

Depending on what you would like to accomplish by employing a refugium, many many things. For instance, a DSB, macro algae, live rock rubble etc. You may add a sand sifting fish if that tickles your fancy. Even snails, and hermit crabs if you would like. The possibilites are endless. A refugium may also act as a sanctuary for maybe a new addition being harassed in your display tank.

HTHs.

Wouldn't a sand sifting fish defeat the purpose of a DSB?

Right now I'm just using a few inches of refugium mud and chaeto macro algae. Disclaimer being that I am very new to this

6 snails
and 2 emerald crabs ( pulled from display cause one was eating fish and the other my GSP )

small clean up crew and rock, sand ( DSB if you choose ) and a microalgea and your set!

DSB = Deep sand bed of 4-6 inches, the purpose of which is to promote anaerobic bacteria to digest nitrates from your system naturally. There are drawbacks. Do a search for "DBS Deep Sand" or similar on google.

Chaeto = a Macroalgae (eBay Chaeto) that also helps with reducing nitrates along with many other benefits.
