Green Algae - Annoying
I have an aggrevating issue with green algae in my 150 REEF tank. I have been battling this for over 8 months now and I am tired of messing with it. I am going to take this opportunity to take down the tank and redo the setup a little differently as I have been planning to do this for a while anyways.
My question is: I have 600lbs of live rock in the tank. What is the best way to make sure that none of the spores from this algae end up in my new tank once it is reestablished? I would hate to bleech all of that rock but if that is what I have to do so be it. Any thoghts/ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, TG

under favorable conditions GHA will grow regardless. you can make all new rock from concrete/argacrete and it'll grow GHA. you've got to eliminate the source of the nutrients or the tank take down is just going to be a waste of your time.
put you a PO4 reactor on the tank, turn the lights off and cover it from any ambient light, keep the skimmer clean and in as little as 3-4 days you will start to see the GHA die off, with you on the verge of taking the tank down, give it a few weeks of darkness and keep that skimmer clean and the PO4 reactor running (swapping the media as necessary) and it'll be gone. |

Yeah, I would leave the lights off for a little while. The algae can't thrive without it.

Yep, what the other 2 said.
The only way to get rid of it is through nutrient export either with clean water and/or absent light. |
