Lighting, how far from the water?

I have a 60 cube and a 250W DE MH how far from the water should i put it?

The way it is set up its only 2 3/4 from the water now. but that sems too close?

8-12" on halides and 3" on florescentw......2 3/4" halide's will turn your tank into a frydaddy fast. You can't use fans effectively this way and your light s don't get as much spread either.
