Selcon and Vitachem
What is the difference between American Marine Selcon and Boyd Vitachem?
Do they provide the same benefit and are just different brands? Which is better? |

I don't think vitachem has lipids in it -- just "vitamins" and aminos. I use Selcon. To be honest, I think they are both a little bit of aquarium voodoo. I just add it because I think it "seems like a good idea" -- though I have not noticed any particular benefit. I toss in some seachem reef plus for the "vitamins and aminos". I dose both about once/week. I am not aware of any studies that show benefit from either product.

They are both food supplements.
They are made to compliment food with very little nutritional value. Most people use some type of fish food (mysid or cyclos) and such foods do not have a full spectrum of vitamins and minerals that fish need. Selcon and Vitachem are made to add those missing elements and keep the fish healthy. Selcon has been around for many years. I have been in the hobby for about 10 years and I always add selcon to my food. Keeps the fish healthy and with a strong immune system so they can fend off parasites and pests by themselves (not have to add any chemicals to my tank). Carlos
