Chaeto,Chaetomorpha, is fine in the display. It just requires a little more pruning, about once a week, to keep it sightly. This is a good thing however as pruning exports both nitrogen and phosphorus from the tank.

Not to hijack the thread, but can you also keep it in your overflows? Maybe some soft of mesh to beep it from getting sucked into the sump??

I have a 3gal picotope, and I kept a handful size clump in the tank. I let it grow out to about 2 times that and then trim it back. I actually like the look of the stuff. Here is a pic of my 3gal:
