New at saltwater, could use any help that anyone wants to give thx!

30tank
Filter is Penguin Bio-Wheel 350 made for 75 gals
light=36" 192W (2-96 watt) Dual Strip Compact Fluorescent Light Fixture with 3 moon lights
2 130gph powerheads and FLO rotating deflector

12 tank
eclips built in filter with bio-wheel
surface skimmer that attaches to the eclips built in filter
light 24" 65W Uni Strip Compact Fluorescent Light Fixture(W/B) with 2 moon lights
overflow box to get water back to the 30 gal

I have a 12gal salt tank that i have already, I am moving it to my room. I have only had it for a year, not doing to bad so far, so i decided to add a 30 gal tank. I am putting the 12gal on my tall dresser and the 30 on my short. I am going to use the 12gal as a refuge tank and the 30 as the main. I havnt put them together yet, just wanted help on if everything i had was ok and how to start the 30, and when i can connect them because one is aged and one is not. Thx again!

#1 recommendation is to read the sticky at the top of this forum entitled:

* New-First Time on RC-Look Here for Answers

#2 recommendation is to ask a lot of questions (you'll have pleanty after looking over that post)

I suspect most will tell you to always use RO/DI water and I typically agree. But I will tell you that when I started my 29g, I used tap without any problems. I ran it through my Penguin 200 for about a week before introducing LR, then after cycling, fish another two or three weeks later. I haven't used tap since. I get RO/DI from my LFS for water changes and top offs.

Best to start with RO/DI from the beginning than risk fighting algae even harder than normal later.

to be safe i would cycle the 30 seperatly...because most likely both of them will go through a cyc;e

Compare prices online before purchasing from LFS. Many things are twice the price at LFS.
