in what order did you place things on the bottom of your tank when you were first setting it up?

placing the rock before sand allows the base to be solid such that the foundation will not shift if the sand gets dug by stars or any sand moving fish.

I put my sand down then dug my base rock (tufa rock) deep into it. I worried about the weight of the rocks above pressing straight down on the glass as i have a 'floating base' But i think i was too caucious!

Agree 100%. I have installed sand then rock so many times and the rock formation collaspes over time because of this exact reason and needs to be redecorated again. Rock first and firmly in place does the trick, never shifts unless maybe an earthquake.

Like the old Biblical saying, build your foundation on sand and it can be washed away. Build your foundation on solid rock instead.
