coraline algae with odd shapes
some of my coraline algae is taking odd shapes. Being optimistic, it is taking the form of a montipora. Is this normal?

Don't know if you care about what a noob like me has to say but none of mine has done that and I have quite a bit of it in the purple color. Most of it looks like either a smooth sheet over the rock or makes little ball-like formations that end up looking like a stack of tiny marbles. Nothing that extends out over the edges in a sheet.

Most of mine looks like the one you described (I also have some of it bunching up as mtiny marbles), however there's a chunk that sticks out as if it was a piece of mantipora. If it grows any larger I'll take pictures to show.

Coralline grows in many ways. It can encrust, branch, plate, and bubble out.

If you can find a copy, Marine Plants of the Caribbean (A field guide from Florida to Brazil) by Littler, Littler, Bucher, and Norris, 1989, ISBN 0-87474-607-8 is an excellent guide to algae, with many pictures and descriptions covering a wide array calcareous and non-calcareous types. They classify them by color and then type. Might even be a new edition out now.
Cheers, Ray

Well, I looked it up and it's $43.99 used on Amazon.com and my library doesn't have it.
I recognize the plant on the front cover as the same thing that is covering the shell of my astrea snail. He's a beautiful walking garden. Would be interesting to know what it is called but I don't think I'll spend that much. |
