Need advice on getting a skimmer setup

I am considering replacing my Deltec skimmer for another skimmer which has the following dimensions: 13.2" X 8.5" X 21.3". This skimmer is an in-sump style skimmer that may not exactly fit in my current sump due to it's height. My alternative plan was fill up a 10 gallon tank and put the new skimmer in it, but the problem is that I am not sure how I can circulate the water from the 10g tank to the sump without risking an overflow of the 10g tank. I'd like to place the skimmer on the floor, just outside of the stand.

If I where to buy 2 of the exact pumps, one to send water to the 10g and another to send water back to the sump, would there be any risks of an overflow? Can anyone offer other alternatives that will be safer?

Thanks

Drill the 10g with an overflow and place it higher than your sump..

one pump in your sump to feed the 10g tank and plumb the overflow back into the sump
unless the bulkhead in the 10g is totally clogged or the pump feeding the 10g is too big, you wont have any overflows

The 10g tank will be having it's back face the side of my stand, so I would have to drill it from the side. Is there any problem with that? Also, when you say drill with an overflow do you mean just drill a hole near the top of the tank?

pretty much just make sure that hole is higher than the water in the sump puta bulkhead on it and use some flex tube or something route the water back into the sump
