Hose clamps

I have been using metal hose clamps for my plumbing, but the clamps around the sump are rusting. Can this be a problem? No, none of them are submersed under water.

What kind of hose clamps do you use that are just strong as metal hose clamps?

Thanks.

If they are anywhere that they could get splashed or salt creep, I use plastic zipties. And I would just make sure that if you keep using metal ones, that they don't drop any of the rust into the tank.

I use platic ones that they sell in the garden hose section. They do have two metal screws but the clamp is plastic.

Would stainless steel clamps work?

Also, would it be alright to just cover the hose clamps with some electrical tape to prevent rust?

Stainless will rust also. Electrical tape will eventually come off and you will find that salt creep has made its way inside.

Although some SS cheapo ones may rust the ones I got from HD and have been using for the last five years have not rusted at all and they have been splashed well.

Hmm, I actually use stainless ones under water.
I haven't seen any rust yet.
I guess I should switch to a plastic one.

I'm just having trouble finding plastic ones that are large enough for the braded flexible pvc. It seems to have a non standard OD.

Edit: The ones I use underwater are also from HD

Some stainless worm drive clamps are made with SS301 and zinc plated screw, others SS301 with SS 305 screws but the right ones are made with SS316 clamp and screw. Those 316 ones are the ones to use.
In any case although 316 might be OK to use under water I would not recommend it.
I get my plastic clamps from www.mcmaster.com the ones I find the most practical and strong are the double snap grip. Look at page 244 Nylon Snap-Grip Hose and Tube Clamps.

I also use the nylon tube clamps. Mcmaster has every size you may need, plus.

Just curious, what harm would it do to the tank if just a little rust got into the water?

I do not think iron rust will do nay harm, it is the alloy metals that will. (zinc, copper etc.)
