New skimmer?
I have recently upgraded my tank to a 90 gallon SPS/LPS from a 36 gallon. I also had a 14 cube that i just wasnt happy with so both tanks were broken down and combined into the 90. I had a seaclone 100 on the 36 gallon and i am aware these are not the greatest skimmers out there. So, now i am in the market for a new skimmer. I want a skimmer to be an in sump model (for lack of space...apartment living). The question is...it seems many people are using the berlin skimmer so they obviosly must be somewhat decent. I have been looking into many different skimmer and the one that has really caught my eye was the DAS BX-1. There is a big price difference when comparing the two so is the DAS really gonna give me the BANG for the buck or should i just go with the Berlin?
If you have any other recomendations please start reccomending... |

the das ex-1 is better than the bx-1, but to answer your question, the berlin is a real peice of $%&* and cant compare the bx-1 at all. if you doe get the bx-1 you casn mesh mod it and almost double your performance which is awesome.
i own the deltec turbo 1250 which is virtually the same skimmer, i mesh modded it and it totally rocks. but even out of the box it's a good little skimmer. |

Just to add ... the DAS EX-1 is a recirculating skimmer but if it fits, it can be used in sump as well as externally.

Well i just ordered the DAS EX-1 literally seconds ago.. I had another thread asking about the deltec AP600 in comparison to the DAS EX-1 but i have gone with the DAS.... Someone said i can run the DAS with a maxijet 900... is there a better route as far as a feed pump or will the maxijet be fine?

Small feed pumps are all that are required to achieve enough flow to get the water level high enough in the skimmer for it to skim correctly. As long as you get enough flow to be able to get the water level to where it needs to be to skim properly which doesnt take much pump to do. Recirc pumps generally recommend turnover of 1 X - 2 X the systems water volume per hour which the Maxi Jets will achieve at the same time as getting that correct water level. I think that most folks that use a Maxi jet probably use the 1200 but thats probably because they already own one and they usually have the pump throttled down some by using the input ball valve on the skimmer. So, I think a 900 would be fine.
