I was just like you a little over a month ago. trying to figure out how to setup/build my refugium.

I have a 55gal tank and have a 24 gal refugium.

As the experts say " get the biggest refugium as you can".

So first thing first. Get an idea of what size you can handle.

You either already have a built in overflow or if not, you will need a overflow box. Lifereef's over flow box is really good.

Then comes the return pump (which will return the water back to the main tank).

It dosent matter what the pump is rated at.

For example i have a overflow box rated at 700gph and a return pump rated at 600gph.

I was like, that wouldn't do the job. But as you go along. You will understand.

In order for the water to drain down the refugium, it requried your pump to pump the water in.

So depending how much flow you want. The highest rated pump, the more gals will flow through your refugium.

How it gives you a better idea.

I am still a newbie myself!!

As big as you have room for. as for plumbing, the above post had some good ideas. if you can swing a 30long just make like half of that a Refugium.
