too much flow
Planning a 40 breeder SPS tank. I have 2 maxi jet 1200s and was planning on modding them. After the mod they will flow 1600 gph each, according to the company that makes them. I will have 450 gph coming from the fuge return. With a total of about 91 times turn over. Is that way too much. Should I only mod one and put the other on a wave maker? Also I am using 2 150 watt 20k hqi and will mount them 3-4 inches above them water. Is this going to give me good color from SPS?

I don't think the turnover is necessarily too much. I'd be more concerned about keeping corals out of the direct blast of those MJmods -- I positioned a Koralia 3 too close to my A. sarmentosa and stripped one side to the bone... poor thing looks like Bele (or is it Lokai? So easy to confuse). A 40 isn't the biggest tank around, so you might have trouble depending on how many corals you have.
That much flow will also play havoc with your sandbed if you're not really careful with positioning, too.

Sounds good. I have 2 TUNZEs in my 3' 65g giving 85x turn over total--no problem--sometimes seems like not enough.
You could try to point them at each other to get a strong cancelling currect.

Why not both on a wave timer?

I heard modded maxi jets will run in reverse some times if put on a wave maker. So 90+ turn over is ok for sps. I thought 40-50 was the max.

No, there are many people running ~100x and more in their SPS tanks. For the most part, with that high a flow you become more limited in what you can keep; for example, many LPS corals don't much care for superhigh flow. That wasn't a problem when the hot corals to keep were SPS but with the new enthusiasm for wildly colored Acans and Micros, extreme flow levels could be a problem. Strong lighting too, for that matter. I had to move a Trachyphyllia and a Fungia into my lower light/flow nano, since they were receding badly. After a couple of days in the calmer tank, they turned right around.

I have a modded 900 in my 20 high and I only keep zoanthids in there, it would have destroyed the lps that used to be in there.
