circles of glass pealing

on the back of my tank i have about 4 or 5 small from nichel to about half a dime size circles of glass cracked and pealing off. i wish i could explain it better and a picture would never come out. its like when you see rock peel layer by layer except its on my tank! just one thin circle slice peeled but still attached. what does this mean for my tank?? my glass is about 5/8 inch

glass doesnt come apart it cracks so it would be my guess that some preasure has been applied to those spots. if you were to have a rock hit the inside of the tank it could crack like that. have you ever seen a pane of glass shot by a BB?

Since glass is basically heated and fused form of silica, I can't understand that kind of flaking. Most glass damage I have seen have been related to some kind of impact and if the craking is outside the impact would have to be from inside. Just a shot in the dark idea because I have never seen that;
- The glass has some kind of glazing and that is what is actually flaking.
-maybe an impact from a mantis?

Crazy ideas, I know, just trying to search out possibilities.

a mantis is a type of shrimp. a large type. they have three methodes of killing. one is to spear its prey(any living creature). and the second is hammering,crushing. and thirdly is slicing/cutting. they live in rock, and have no problem making a home. now these extreamly pretty buggers are very aggressive. they have been known to attack thier owners, causing some pretty nasty wounds. i believe we may be talking about the second above mentioned specimen. and yes if large enough they can and do explode large tanks. i would think you would have seen it when you feed though. and since its the back of the tank, it probably isnt tempered glass. so you wouldnt see spiderwebs, but it would chip. if you can, a picture would be awsome. and if it is a mantis, and you can catch it, its easy to get people to take/buy them.

I cant explain that. It sounds like when you shot a high pressured BB through glass. It chips on the other side. Me personnally I wouldnt even use the tank anymore. I would just get a new one. Because glass can be funny like that. It is one of the strongest man made material but also one of the most fragile. Once there is damage to it it becames very unstable.

Are you positive that it didnt come with a scratch film on it from the factory and it should have been peeled off.

If its a new tank I would get ahold of the store where you bought the tank just incase you have to take the tank back.

Meco, nice looking elephant nose yellow tangs you got there. I've seen a clown with a pair of wing before.

Salty, sound like you got some kind of coating on your glass. Take a soft scrapper and scap it off.

If it not a film of some kind and you only have FW in the tank then IMO, I would meco65 suggested and think about getting another tank because there seems to be a construction problem. It is not normal for a tank to flake and it will be a potential issue of catastrophic failure once you get the weight of SW and LR in the tank. The load is MUCH heavier than anything that FW can do to the tank.
