How tall is your tank? What bulbs are you using ? And when you say SPS what exact corals are you considering?

I keep acros montis millis. You name it. I started with a 20 gallon high with a single 150 14k. Then moved to a 29 gallon with the same light. After that it was to a 55 gallon with 2 150 14k. I feel that the 55 is too tall. All SPS needed to be hight on the rock to get good color. I am now planning a 40 breeder with the samelights using 20k. 150 watts is fine but the more light the better color and growth you will get. Hope this helps

I have a 20 gallon with a 150W MH fixture. But I only have about 6 small pieces of sps in it mixed in with a lot of zoas and they are all doing fine for now...knock on wood...

I am growing all kinds of SPS under 150 watt halides. I have two of them, and 4 t5's for actinics. I try to keep the sps higher in the tank, but I have had one colony go from the size of a golf ball, to the size of a coconut in 6 months. (I know the analogy is retarded but it's all I could think of at the moment). I think that a depth of 18 inches should be about the limit for that wattage.

I have a tank FULL of SPS and run a 150 Halide DE 14K.
Granted it's only on a 30G cube. So 150 will do just fine for SPS.
However a 150 on a 300G tank will not work for SPS...

Figure my tank is 150/30 = 5 Watts of light per gallon...

I have 2x150 DE over my 120. SPS is mostly relegated to the top half of the tank, but they're doing fine.

Phurst brought up a good point-- the DE bulbs (double ended) give off a lot more light/watt than the old school mogul base (the old "screw in" type). Most new fixtures are DE.

2x150w 14k only on a 55g and all is well. The watts per gallon rule is not an effective way to determine lighting needs. It is better to look at the PAR value of the lamp.
