You "can" have any size you want. I am making a 20 gal sump now.

I think a 20 is good for a 75. I have a 55 and Im using a 20 gallon sump. There are people on here that have a 10 gallon sump made from an old glass tank.

I would suggest going as big as you can/fit where you want to place it.

I use a 30g under mine. I planned a 20 but decided to go with a 30 to get the extra water capacity. Its also the largest I could fit under the stand with a little room left on the side for my supplies. Best bet would be get the biggest you can fit under there with room for anything else you may need.
I use a 15g under my 29g for a sump.

I think a 40 breeder would be a good size sump for your 75

A 30 fits under my stand nicely. Remember that once you actually hook it up, it won't be totally filled with water. You'll have to leave some room in case the return pump gets its power cut. I think about 5 or 6 gallons drains out of my display to the sump.

I didn't state what I have, have a 30 gal sump with my 75. However, the way my stand is, it wouldn't fit underneath it so I had to make a separate stand for the sump. Think it turned out pretty well,

Here is an old ( year and a half ) picture -- the tank is totally different now, one of these days I will take a new one.

I've got a 30 tall under my 75g Oceanic. I modified the tank with glass baffles I bought from a local store. I did have to shoehorn the tank in a bit, but once it was in there I still had some room on one side for some other items.

If you are just looking for a sump and not a refugium, then really you only need to consider a couple of things when sizing your sump. First, you will need a sump that will handle the size of your protein skimmer, if you use an in sump model. Secondly, the sump will need to be able to handle the amount of overflow your tank will put off when the pumps are turned off.

As other's have indicated, it really is in your best interest to try and get the largest sump you possibly can. The larger the better, but if you must go small, make sure you at least satisfy the above requirements.

Cheers!
