bubble trap on refuge?

What is the purpose of a bubble trap on a refuge or sump setup? Could you not just put one wall up seperating your pump from your sand, algae etc?

Oftentimes, micro-bubbles will be generated somewhere in a reef setup...most ofter by the protein skimmer. The "bubble trap" configuration of baffles is designed to more or less eradicate by breaking down, any micro-bubbles before they reach the sectiuon of the sump which holds the return water-pump.
