to clean a freshwater tank with gravel, yeah, all the time.
Wouldn't put one near my saltwater setups though. I like my deeper sandbeds and one of those would negate the effects of having a deep sand bed. For those with smaller sandbeds (less than an inch or so) I'd recommend using one to eliminate the higher detritus buildup that tends to occur in smaller beds.

Yeah thats what I was thinking, to get rid of the deritus. My sand bed is about 2" thats not considered a deep sand bed is it?

yeah they can suck up some sand, depending on the grain sized used, smaller will be more likely to get sucked up, while something like crushed coral will act simlar to typical freshwater aquarium gravel.
2" is not considered a "Deep Sand Bed" typically. Some smaller sugar fine grain sized sands can still benefit at only 2" but the simple answer, Nope. Just need to take care when using the vac.
