here is a question for you?
i have a 210 aga tank. been set up for about a year. i have not noticed a size difference in my tangs. i have a yellow, hippo, lavender, and a sailfin. i did notice a difference in the hippo but only because he was the size of a quarter when i got him.
i hear all this talk about tangs out growing the tank in such a quick time and yet mine are not growing (at least it seems like) at all. i feed them every day. 1 nori sheet and either flake food or the frozen square stuff. why are my fish not growing? |

How big were the others when you got them? Do they look healthy? Do they look thicker at all? If they are not growing, I would suggest 3 reasons:
1) Not getting enough to eat 2) Disease 3) Poor water quality Less likely is that you got mature fish which are already a good size and therefore grow slowly. Give us more information. |

they are all about 3 inches. they are thick and look very healthy. never had any issues as far as disease goes. and i do believe that my water quality may not be perfect but i would say it is good.. i have a ton of coral (alot of sps) so i dont think the quality of water is an issue. i feed them once a day two things. which should i increase? algae sheets, frozen, or flake? i really dont want to inincrease the frozen or flake. dont want to increase the nitrates with uneaten food so i will increase the algae sheets to two times a day. what do you think?

Do the fish eat one full algae sheet in a days time? I owuld try and steer away from flake food as it doesnt have the nutriton these fish need. I would try and use mysis shrimp, formula 1 and or 2 or even both. Just switch the food around every now and then.

Thanks for the additional information. If disease and water is not a problem, then I think the answer is in the feeding. I agree with steering away from flake. I would feed a good quality frozen mix as suggested by Blown346 and basically I give my fish as much as they are willing to eat in a 5 minute period twice aday. I would also just leave the nori around on several clips and give the tangs a chance to graze throughout the day. Good luck with your fish.

My tangs get fed 3 times a day and are growing like crazy. They get a sheet of nori at 12:00pm and 9:00pm. They get a frozen mixture around 5:00pm. My Achilles and Kole have grown an inch in 10 months. In 2.5 years my Hippo has grown almost 6 inches. I soak all my foods in garlic and selcon as well. All three are very thick. IME they usually hit growth spurts, then slow down.
