Hippo tang (pic)
Hi. My friend is moving so he needs to take apart his tank. He has a hippo tang that he doesnt want to sell to the LFS. He wants me to take it. I have a 75 gallon mixed reef.
Fish: 1. 2 occelaris clowns 2. bangaii cardinal 3. midas blenny 4. diamond goby 5. coral beauty 6. Yellow tang 7. Flame Hawk I've got a bunch of corals and about 100 lbs of live rock. I have a 506 fluval filter and prism protein skimmer. 1 koralia powerhead, 1 maxi jet 1200 w/ quick filter. Soon I will be getting a cpr aquafuge hang on refugium w/ a protein skimmer. Should I take in the hippo tang? Is it too much fish? Are they aggressive? To big for my tank?? Here is my tank: thanks!

You probably don't want to ask this question.
You don't say how big it is, but it will outgrow your tank. I know how your friend is feeling. He knows some kid with a 30 may end up with it if he sells it to the lfs. Your yellow may also put up a fight with new inhabitants, but every fish is different. I think your setup looks in balance , and I wouldn't throw it off. Maybe sell or give it away on RC to someone with a huge tank that will keep him. Good luck either way.

If the hippo is small (2"), it will out grow a 75gal tank in less than a year. Most tangs are big and they need bigger tanks (>100gal) to live happily.

yellow tang may bully hippo unless the combination of bigger hippo than smaller yellow tang.
If I were you, I'll try to get out yellow tang, and put hippo inside your main tank for couple day, then put back the yellow tang if the hippo with a size less than 4" should be fine in your 75g tank, but prepare to upgrade, as jeweldamsel said, it won't be happy and will outgrow your tank pretty soon. |

I've had a yellow tang in my tank for years, then last year I also got a hippo tang.
The yellow tang and hippo get along fine. But my occelaris clowns do try to take a nip at the hippo. The hippo just turnes sideways and swims off. Also I've had my hippo for over a year and he's about the same size he was when I purchased him. Around 4" |

Dont do it. My hippo tang has pretty much outgrown my 125g already. Ive had it for about 3 years. It was 1" when I got it and is now around 6". These fish get big and need a lot of swimming room.

IMO Sell it on RC to someone that can keep comfortably. You will need to upgrade faster than you think.

If its small enough(usually 4inch and below) then you can try and care for it temporary until you find a better home. It will outgrow your 75gal quick. Just be sure you know what you wanna do.

Your tank is so nice looking. I wouldn't chance it and have to tear it apart to get one or the other out.

Hippos are nice but I regret having 1 in my 55 I thought I would sell it once it grew too big. He is close to 4 inches and still in my tank. I need to sell mine ASAP. Don't make my mistake...

why do you regret it...I've come to the conclusion that i wont take my friends hippo tang but im just curious....My final wishlist for my tank is some blue mushrooms or zoanthids (dont care which coral i just want blue) =) and a yellow leather. I feel that i dont have enough color in the tank. Ill put a recent photo of the tank up....
