Skimmer outside of sump

Is there an advantage to having the skimmer in the sump versus outside and pumping from the sump to the skimmer. Also I notice a lot of people put their skimmer on top of the sump on eggcrate. Is there a advantage to doing it this way?

Depends on the skimmer. I have a coralife SS 220 and have it mounted outside the sump to give me more room. Some skimmers are made to be in the sump and can not hang on the side.. Hope this helps

I have a Super Vortex which is similiar to the Coralife I want to get it out of the sump for more room and to make it easier to get to. I can't see any disadvantage of it being outside the sump unless it overflowed.
