please help
I set up my tank about a week ago I used cured live rock and live sand. All my levels test good no ammonia nitrates 5 ppm and nitrite 0 I have an outbreak of brown algae on my rock is this normal and will it kill the coral that came on the rock or the couple fish i added to cycle the tank? please help if you know also will it dissapear on its own?

It is likely just diatoms and this normal for new tanks.
Why did you use fish to cycle if you got live rock? The live rock should cycle the tank. |

I totally agree with techigirl. Sounds like diatoms and it is totally normal for new tanks.
Water changes, skimming and running some type of GFO, preferably in a reactor, will help in clearing it up. It will eventually subside. I believe mine last for about a week to two weeks.

I used the fish beacuse someone on here told me I needed them to put ammonia in my tank to feed the rock. So it should clear up all by itself? thank you everyone.

Ok. In the future if you setup another tank, you don't really need fish if you get a decent amount of live rock. The ammonia and nitrite hurts their gills and can cause permanent damage. The live rock will kick off the cycle just fine. Congrats to making it through the cycle!

Yes you do not need fish at all although I did make that same mistake...
