Chromis doing excavation work

I have a scissortail chromis who has had one area of my 58 gallon tank "under construction" for awhile. There was a small naturally occurring tunnel under one of the rocks due to the rock's shape. Every now and then we notice a flurry of sand coming out from one side of the rock or the other. Fortunately the rock is seated down on the glass already. I happened to drop a small shell in the tank (in case one of the hermit crabs wants to "move up" in real estate). It landed outside the "front door" of the chromis' home and he promptly started pushing it out of his doorway with his head. Is this typical chromis behavior?

I'm not sure but it looks like he is "claiming" his territory.
