"mold" on the bottom
I have a strange substance growing on top of my sand it is very dark in color and looks like a layer of mold. What is the best way to stop the growth and what is it?? I have had it in a tank before and I just got a sand sifting star to fix the problem. I was thinking of doing pods so I do not really want to get the star any suggestions?

What are your water para. Just not perfect but actual numbers. Its sounds like cyno bacteria, whichs is common when not enough flow, high nutrients are present.

may be diatoms also. Happens often to new tanks. I prefer a diamond goby to stir the sand, mine does a great job. Some nassau snails work well also. The snails will not deplete the sand bed organisms as badly as the starfish or odg.
