Reef safe Wrasses

I have a 90 gallon reef tank, and I was just wondering about wrasses. I really want to get a "reef safe" wrasse, and so I was looking at the radiant wrasses. Anyone have experience with these wrasses?

Also, what wrasse would you recommend for a 90 gallon reef?

ZLTFUL is a lucky one. The Sixilined Wrasses often get very feisty and can harrass other even larger fish in the tank.

I've heard the sixline wrasse is an excellent choice. I'm probably going to add one to my tank in a few weeks.

We had a Scott's Fairy Wrasse in our reef. We had no problem with him. In fact he was quite timid. Too timid though and too easily frightened. Unfortunately, he was a jumper and managed to squeeze his way through the tiny area that was cut out for the overflow box. Very sad. I miss that guy.

I had a fairy wrasse he was great got along with everyone and loved being looked at. Which ever one you end up getting MAKE SURE you have a cover on your tank. I have a seven inch canopy over my tank so I thought mine would be ok! I came home and he was dried up on the floor.

Haleochoris (sp?) wrasses harass (sometimes eat) motile invertebrates but are usually helpful in eating most pests like monti eating nudibranchs, bristleworms, etc.

Chiraballus (sp?) wrasses are generally very timid and will leave invertebrates alone. These are your fairy wrasses typically.

There are several other families of wrasses such as psuedojoules which I know almost nothing about.

What other fish do you have in your tank? Do you have and/or want a dragonet at some point?

Right now I have a one spot foxface, mandarin dragonet, regal tang, and a lawn mower bleany. Will this wrasse attack feather dusters or clams? Or Corals?

All wrasses are (reef safe) meaning they wont eat corals....but may eat shrimp snails or bother other fish

beware of the 6 line. If you want one, add him last. I had one and it killed at least 5 fish I tried to add after him.

I believe its a bit of "luck of the draw", when it comes to personalities. We have a carpenters flasher wrasse - doesn't bother our corals and will chase the chromis's away if they wonder too close. We got a bit of advise early on stating feed A little twice a day and aggression may be slowed. This is working well in our aquarium. We really enjoy our wrasse. good luck

I added my six line wrasse at the same time as my royal gramma. I already had a clown in the tank for 3 weeks. Everyone seems to be getting along just fine. I also have green stripe mushrooms, brown mushrooms & a bubble tip anemone. Everything is going great.

newfish3, try adding another small fish or another wrasse a month after you have that 6line and you will see its true colors come out. I loved mine becuase it ate alot of bad things and looked good, but he was a bully.

I have a 4 line wrasse, a christmas wrasse and a radiant wrasse (very hard to keep)

I plan on getting a melanarus wrasse soon.

I was also told checkerboard wrasses are nice but get big.

I would trade my 4 line for a mystery wrasse, but the 2 are not compatible in the same tank.

So far so good. If the six line acts up, I will take him out back and rough him up.

Lunar Wrasses are not reef safe as they will eat shrimp and clams.

They are very timid and do not acclimate well. I am on my 4th one now and he looks like he is going to make it.

You can see a picture of him in the Reef Fish forum.

Other than that, they need a deep sand bed, a tight fitting lid as they tend to jump.

Once you get them, if they do not start eating right away, they will stress out and die.

Add to that, they are hard to locate, most of the online stores are sold out and when they do get some, they sell them in an instant.

Dont get me wrong, I love mine. They are fun to watch and very colorful.

As for Feather dusters, I think they will eat the small white ones, but not sure they would mess with the large ones. They have a tiny mouth and seem to prefer small bits of food and reef bugs.
