top on or off tank??

I have a Current Sunpod 250 watt/ 14,000 K light and the directions said it should be used with a lid. I got an acrylic lid custom made at my LHS. Should I use it or better without it?

i have a glass top on my tank and it doesnt really seem to make a difference unless it gets dirty. I feel safer when my lid is on because i know the cats arent going to climb in and that my lighting wont get splashed.
