Best skimmer for 75 gal.

My 75 gal. mixed reef tank has been doing great for 2 years. But I recently replyed to a post and mentioned that I have a Prism Deluxe for my 75 gal. with 20 gal. sump, At which time people promptly dismissed it as a piece of garbage. My tank is doing so well, I probably shouldn't mess with it. But if I did decide to get a new skimmer, What would be the advantage of more aggresive skimming?,and what would be the best skimmer for my size tank? Please bear in mind that I am not cheap, but I can't afford to buy a skimmer just to keep up with the Jones.

If it aint broke don't fix it!

But if you're in the market, take a look at Euroreef RS100 or the Octopus brand. Both are top of the line.

I have a 65 gallon tank with a 29g sump and I'm running an AquaC Urchin Pro driven by a mag-drive 3. So far it's done a great job at foaming out all the crud.

The advantage of more agressive skimming is better overall fish health, coral health,& cleaner water.Having a good skimmer is IMO a critical part of a happy reef.

I would suggest a G-Series skimmer a G1,or G2 would work really nice.Even a Mini G would work for your setup since your not keeping SPS.

And yes the Prism skimmers are a big P.O.S

I would suggest anything over the ASM's. I am running a G3 at the moment and hate it. I will be upgrading to a Deltec or H&S when money permits. I am tired of buying cheap skimmers that have subpar craftsmanship and performance. With all the money I have spent on crap skimmers and trying to mod them to make them work better I could have been halfway to a nice Deltec.

Not to mention the constant adjusting of the G3 to get it to skim properly and how you think you have it skimming good and come home and it has overflowed all the gunk it pulled out back into your system.

I hear good things about the octopus, euroreef rc, H&S, Deltec, ATI, Tunze skimmers.

I have a euroreef rs100 on my 45G and it's awesome. It's not too expensive and it works great and excellent craftsmanship.

Its where the hose connects to the grey piece that comes off the pump.It gets clogged with salt creep. You done have to remove the pump from the skimmer body, just take off the piece that the clear hose attaches too,& remove the hose, then use a toothpick to clean out the hole.

I have a 75g and an ASM G2... I had to mod it w/ gate valve and mesh mod just to give me that nice performance. I'm satisfied with it right now but if I have the money I'm definitely upgrading to something else. The Sedra 3500 is super noisy and the skimmer is just too bulky for the sump.

Right now I'm looking at the Tunze 9010.

I really appreciate all the feedback. I copied all the models you said were good and I'm gonna check them out. Thanks, Brian

yes I keep my ASM G3 clean and I still have to constantly adjust it. One day it skims great the next it doesn't and then it overflows just to add a little excitement.

the quality of workmanship is terrible and if you recirc mod it (to make it work "better") it adds the ghetto dimension by the pump falling out of the uniseal every time you you touch it.

Interesting comment about the Sedra 3500. I recently got a Euro Reef RS-135 needle wheel. I have a 75 gallon DT and a 30 gallon sump. Probably has about 20 gallons of water in the sump. My skimmer was exceptionally quiet for about the 1st month. Then became a little bit noisier until it was almost as loud as my Mag 7 return pump. I contacted Euro-Reef and they sent me a new impeller. On installation it ran as quiet as original. I'm extremely happy with the gunk this thing pulls out of my tank. The thing I wonder about is the Sedra pump. Mine is a 5000, but similar in nature.
As to the point of the thread. I'd recommend the RS-135. Its done an incredible job on my tank.
