Yes, they can grow exceptionally fast. It's best to try and keep them separated from other rocks or glass so that they're easier to cut back as they start growing.
People have reported a quarter inch growth in two weeks with a lot of flow and under MH lighting. Mine grow fairly quickly as well, but I have not had them growing that fast.
