make sure to put something under it for vibrations, I've used mags before and the larger ones do have a noticeable low hum

I used some mouse pad material

but I've seen some people just putting dabs of silicone on the bottom, that probably works well also if you've got some

Is the new Mag for a closed loop or your main return line?

I would not trust the pad, they come with a pad thou, I run one I know all things add heat but it has not been a concern for me, summer time if I do not have the AC on I get heat but lights, PH, return pump all add to it.

i have the mag 12 on my 90 for a return, i also run 2-250 watt halides and i still need to run a heater. i would not be too concerned for the heat, atleast i am not concerned on my tank. one tip would be to run flex tubing instead of hard pluming, this will help with the vibrations. also i have heard of people using the silicone heat pads for cooking and they have not had any issues with that.

Ah hah.. that explains it. The only way I was able to quiet my Mag was using mostly flex hose (not pvc) between pump and tank. I currently use 90% pvc and it's a vibration monster. Hope your's is quieter.

I use a Mag12 for a return pump. I found that if you suspend the pump so that it is not touching any surfaces of the sump, it is practically silent.

You can see the Y fitting and the spa-flex hose that attaches to this; the spaflex is still stiff enough to prevent the pump from touching the sides or bottom.

Here is the pump as it is suspended; simple yet effective and no worry as to whether or not it is reef safe.
