Do we normally leave the shell in the tank or take it out?

I tend to take it out to keep it from getting hung up in pumps, powerheads, overflows, etc.....

Whatever you want. Sometimes I let it stay, sometimes I take it out. My fish will nibble on it as well as other things. It's usually gone after about a day or so.
