Royal Gramma and Firefish goby?
I got one of each of these guys yesterday... The firefish was out when i got home today, but saw me and darted back in his hole, not to be seen again tonight.. and The goby has been hiding in the same spot since i put him in last night. Is this normal for these fish, or are they sick or incredibly scared and need some kind of live brine with garlic or something? I have only has freshwater fish until now, and they dont do this at all.
Thanks for the help. |

Give it some time. Firefish are a very timid fish but once established will become an active citizen. Be patient no need to be worried at the moment. Keep a carefull eye for now.

my gramma hides a lot but it does come out from time to time. From what I read they are cave dewlers and like the rocks.

New fish should be quite timid. You should be concerned if they spend too much time out because that means they are not being aware of their surroundings. These are prey animals, they are supposed to be wary of everything.

My Royal was not seen for three days and then only fleeting. everytime me or my wife would walk by it would dive back in to an old turbo shell. Yep a turbo shell! i looked everywhere for that fish and just happened to see its head. this went on for two weeks before it started to come out for any length of time. now it is just as bold as the others, it will defend it cave and, depending on the fish in the area, the whole rock where the cave is located. be patient, make sure they get food and enjoy the wait. goodluck

i have the same fish too! do you have other fish? more agressive ones?
dont worry, theyll be fine, mine stayed in thier holes too, for maybe 1-2 weeks, but now theyre out the whole day and sleeps at their mini caves at night. i gave mine some food at the opening of their "caves" coz i dont want them to be hungry. |

I have those two also, the firefish rarely comes out, kinda sucks because I would like to see him more.
The royal gramma is out most of the time. My only other fish is a maroon clown, who is mostly peaceful... The firefish will come out when I put some frozen brine shrimp in there though! |

I have a new firefish in quarantine that has been (and hopefully will continue to be when I move it over this weekend) a great addition. It stays in the PVC most of the time when the light is off but comes out and stays out when it is on. Comes to the front of the tank when we walk up slowly, but will dart back in the PVC in response to passing movement. I think they are great community fish that require time to acclimate to new surroundings. Unfortunately, they are vulnerable to even semi-aggressive fish.
