If I get a coral frag from friend is that considered captive bread coral

I am new to reef, going from FOWLR.

All of my corals are from fellow reefers who I buy or was given from their frags. So if I receive frags from fellow hobbyists, is this also considered captive breed, because they are not taken from the wild?

Just asking.

Thank you,

It's really a great way to go even beyond the environmental issue. Transport is the biggest one for me, minimizing the stress.

Wouldn't propagated suggest that they were plant matter?

They are in some ways similar to plants(require light and nutrients to grow). The only way corals breed is through spawning which is rare in the hobby.

Yes, coral that is grown out in someones tank is going to be easier to raise. For many reasons such as, acclimated to aquarium lighting, parameter fluctuations ect.....

Yes, it is captive bred or, rather, aquaculture!

Good on you, especially if you choose to stick with aquaculture or captive bred specimens for your tank!

Kathainbowen,

I personally do like obtaining captive propagated corals. I did purchase my cleaner shrimp from the LFS.

I am also hoping to limit my "fish additions " as best as I can to local reefers.

My own scorecard is:

2 damsels (from local reefers)
1 goby ( local reefer)
1 maroon clown (LFS, wish I had known about my local club).
1 cleaner shrimp (LFS).
Snails (LFS), I need to improve.

So as you said, my goal is to make all additions as captive propagation as best as I can.

Thank you for your feedback.
