6 leg starfish

I just bought a starfish from the lfs. It was labeled a chocolate chip star and that is what it looks like except that it has 6 legs instead of the normal 5. Is there another type that has 6 legs or is this just a freak of nature?

If you get a chance to read this before you take him out of the bag................ I have been told that you cant let a starfish hit the air. You have to put the bag in the water & cut the bottom of the bag in the water & let him out. It has something to do with the air chambers in the star.

The last time I told this to someone here, a few people came on & said that I was wrong.....Its not true, it doesn't hurt if he touches air...........I wouldn't take the chance. Just the other day a friend of mine bought a star, took it out of the bag. the next day it curled up & died......

Dont take the chance....IMO

Depends on the type of star whether they can handle air exposure or not. If in doubt, don't expose them. I personally have never heard of a 6 legged choc. chip. Could be a "freak", could be I don't know enough, or could be that the lfs did not label it correctly.

I think that is for sponges. For stars it is OK. At least the ones I have (Red-Serpent and fromia stars)>

probably, and a pretty sweet looking freak at that.
about the starfish touching air...i heard somewhere that it's because an air-bubble can get trapped in their mouth, and they can't feed so they starve. i don't know about all stars, i was told this about fromias though. apparently you're supposed to put them in the tank upside down just in case, so that the air bubble can release. they will flip themselves over right away. looks really cool

Iam a starfish killer so i wont be of any help here...i have never been able to keep any starfish alive for more than 6 months and that was in my daughters school room tank..i put one in my home tanks and its dead in a week at the most.

i could not keep tangs alive until i had a tank crash now i have a yellow and a sailfin both THRIVING WELL and just aquired a powder blue this week from divers den and it seems to be doing well

I think one of these days iam gonna try doing the stars the way i did the tangs...the sailfin was in my lfs for several months before i got it the same with the yellow..now the powder blue was from divers den..i guess i might wait until the star has been at the lfs for several months before i buy it or buy it from divers den then maybe i can keep one alive
