Anemone Issue....

Woke up this morning to my anemone sucked into the side of my Koralia 4. He was secured to the glass last night, but apparently didnt like that spot.

Question:

Should I try to pull him out of the side of it, or let him work his way out on his own? I dont want to cause any damage if he could do it on his own.

What are the odds that this just killed it? How long should I wait before removing it if I am not sure. I just dont know exactly what kind of damage it can do to other inhabitants if dead/dying.

Please tell me you turned the power head off allready? An anemone sucked through and pureed through a powrehead can wreck plenty of havoc, ruining water quality, not to mention little bits of anemone stingy everything they come into contact with.

Remove it or leave the P/H off till he moves. If the P/H needs to stay off for any length of time, get another in the tank so the tank doesn't suffer from lack of flow.

If he's been massively damaged, good luck, good chance he won't pull through.

Yes, I of course turned off the P/H as soon as I saw it. I have another Koralia 4 on the other side of the tank, so the flow should be fine for the time being.

Looks like part of his base got pulled through a groove in the side of the P/H. That is the part I am wondering if I should assist in getting it back through the groove.

Well, I got him out of there by breaking the plastic on the side of the P/H. wish I could get him anchored somewhere so he didnt go around ****ed off stinging everything he can. Just turned off all the P/H's and gonna give him about 10 minutes to get settled before I turn them back on.

you won't be able to "make" him stay put. if their unhappy they'll walk around trying to find somewhere optimal for him. Now if he's very unhealthy and not doing well at all, he may not have the energy to expell walking around and just stay put and slowly die, or get well first.

I've always stuck mine close to where I'd like them ultimatly, and once they grab ahold in a good spot, I make sure they get very well fed there. If they move, i don't feed em till he gets back to where he was or close to. So far, my anemone hasn't moved more than an inch or two in any particular direction. he knowns he's in a good spot. Done this with 3 Bubble tips so far and it's worked like a charm for me.

Well, as you can see all the tentacles are like deflated and he looks nothing like what he did when I put him in there. I just have to leave in the next few minutes and trying to decide if I should just remove him. I dont want to leave all the powerheads off for 4 hours until I get back, but if he is still alive and could be okay I would feel terrible removing him.

That is a good plan to get him to stay where you want though, I will definitely try that if this works out.

Oh, and what do you suggest feeding a Purple tip anemone? Pieces of krill ok?

If his tentacles or foot is not ripped, he may be unhappy at the moment. I was horrified to see how small, deflated and gray in color my anemone could get. He's only done it a few times. I have also read they can stay deflated for a few days. So don't take him out unless he starts to fall apart.

Agreed Suzimcmullen, he's probably just ticked off, which of us wouldn't be if our foot got caught in a powerhead? If he's not damaged physically and just deflated, give him some time, he should be okay.

As for feeding a purple tip anemone. Are you refering to a Condi? First thing I'd suggest is getting rid of it (do some research and you'll see why), Second, feed them just like you'd feed other anemone's. Stuff like mysis for smaller ones, pieces of kirll, squid, silversides, ect. ect. A variety is always nice for em. Smaller guys will need stuff like silversides cut down to appropriate sizes for them while larger foot across bubble tips can easily devoire an entire silverside.

Okay I will leave him in there for the time being. I just dont know how to keep him out of the P/H again. If he wont stay attached to something there is nothing I can do other than keep the P/H turned off. He was so good looking yesterday too when he was all perked up.

If it makes ya feel any better, when my Rose Bubble is looking his best and fully inflated, enjoying life, I have to move my Koralia a few inches up so he don't get sucked in. Most days when he's just "typical" looking, he's not close enough to it.

I read that you can take the plastic square sheets that are meant for a type of needle point, cut them and sew them together, I suppose with plastic fishing wire.. fit it around the power heads and it won't reduce the flow too much.

Well, he is looking better this afternoon....the tips of his tentacles though, about 70% of them are pretty bad looking. He is attached to a rock (by the side of his base though). I guess I will see if I get get him some mysis this afternoon or a krill.

I just had this happen with a rose bubble anem. So far so good. To add another interesting twist...it had moved to the back of some rocks to recoup but stayed bubbled up the whole time, then all of a sudden we had two rose bubble tips. Initially the anem was sucked in the PH about two weeks ago and this last weekend we woke up to find an anem close to the top of the overflow box and we realized that there was still one behind the rocks! I had no idea it could do that! Anyhow one is still in the rocks, looking great and the other is in the middle of the tank stuck up top on the back glass.

Well, my guy is still looking good this afternoon and has eaten 2 pieces of krill and some random mysis shrimp. He is nicely footed on a rock at this point and I am going to try to keep him there by feeding him a lot. I have turned both P/H's back on and just moved the one closest to him a little farther away, and am just hoping that he stays solidly put and doesnt get sucked up again.....fingers crossed
