elementary protein skimmer question

I have been involved with reef keeping for some time now, and I was thinking I had a good grasp on quite a few aspects of this hobby. However, lately, after looking at several pictures of skimmers in use, I am starting to believe that I have never really had any idea where to properly set the water level in my protein skimmer. I currently have a CSS 220, and for a long time, I have had the water level about half way up the skimmer cup. However, I notice people that have their water levels down in the neck of the skimmer below the skimmer cup. I also noticed that they are producing a lot better foam than I am . have I been using my skimmer wrong all this time?

Am I way off here? I hope this makes sense. Any help would be great.

Hmm some Pic's would be helpful here...
I have a ASM G2 skimmer and I normally keep it half way up neck (Like you are)... if you are not getting the foam you think you should be getting, I'd check the air in take to see if it's clear...
I've been on many service calls and have fixed problems by clearing the air way first. hope it helps...
