Lightbulb I want halides over my stretch hex...Help!

Hi all,
I have a 40g stretch hex and I really want metal halides. Because of where I live right now I absolutely cannot do a suspension type setup. It has to go on the aquarium. Because of the shape of the tank, the standard mounting legs will not work and halides obviously can't sit on the glass top. My only option is some type of clip on system. The reason I want to go to halides is because I would like to keep a clam and possibly an anemone and some sps, and I just really like the look of halides. The highest wattage clip on fixture I can find is 150w. Is this enough for what I want to keep? My tank dimensions are L 305 x W 21 x H 18.5. I saw this on Foster and Smith http://www.drsfostersmith.com/produc...2&pcatid=13922
Could this possibly work for me?
Thanks for the help

Steven

I think you would have to go with two of them. And that would be expensive. You could also take a look at Sunpod fixtures.

Ok, I see. I thought the sides had a flat part.

I wouldn't say that but you might just have to go with 2 of the clip on lights. Do they make 75W or 70W versions?

Wouldn't two 75s be the same as a single 150? Marine depot has the viper clip on in 75w and 150w. Would it be overkill to get two of the 150w?

if your tank 21 inches wide perhaps you could get lights for a 10 gallon tank and just put them the other way around. alot of lights are somewhat adjustable.

you could ask soemone with a sunpod to see how adjustable the legs are, i;d imagine the 20inch model might work

So instead of placing the from side to side, place them front to back? Would it spread the light enough? Is there anyone with a sunpod that would like to contribute?!? Sorry for all the questions!

You could just build a canapy like I did. I think this is the same tnak you are talking about. It only took a day to build. (In this picture my light is not supported by the canapy but it will be)

Is this the tank you have?

This is an old picture where I had a very large light over it. I will try to find a picture of the canopy closed.

Yes that's my tank. I thought about building a canopy I just wasn't sure how to stand it on the tank. Unfortunantly, I'm not very good at DIY stuff, so that's why I was hoping to find something that would just sit on top, but I will definitely consider a canopy. Can you post more pics of yours? Also, how did you get your 29g sump to fit in the cabinet? Can you post more pics of your setup? Thanks for the help

The 29 gallon sump is under the 75 gallon tank. I have a ten gallon sump/refugium under my 40. I would take more pictures of the tank but it crashed due to an electrically short Is your tank drilled?) It would be allot nicer to have a closed loop!

Yeah it would, but no it's not drilled. When I bought it I didn't know nearly as much as I know now or I would have bought a reef ready that wasn't such a hard shape to work with. I like the tank, but next time I will go with a standard rectangle or cube! What do you think about putting a sunpod on it and sitting it front to back so I could use the legs? I just hate to get it and then have to return it.

That would work as far as function. I did something similar before. I just hatted the way it looked. I actually had two pc lights on it and the reef did fine under it. I had some sps, lps, softies and a anemone. The only reason I changed to mh was because I wanted to hide the equipment better and I got it very cheap. ($75 from reefcentral)

Right now I have PCs. 3 65w ABS system from Hamilton. It does alright, but I don't really like the way it looks and I have to keep my glass top on. I would really like to take the top off and just cover it with eggcrate. I think it would look cleaner.
