you don't need a big refugium. i have like a 5g refugium on my 40g. maybe a 10-15g for your tank. you could go bigger. it's what you like pretty much.

Water volume is a good thing; the more the better. Go with the largest sump you can fit. A large sump also creates more room for a large skimmer and a good size area to plalce macro algae.
You can successfully use a small sump as advised above, but I would definitely go with as big of one as you can.
