reef questions

Hi, I'm going to start a 55g tank and I'm really curious to know how much lighting to maintain any coral, what's a closed loop system, is a dsb in the sump good or bad and is it necessary to supplement metal halide lighting with power compacts or other bulb? I think that's all I can remember right now but I'll appreciate any more info anyone can give me to go in the right direction.
