ok a overflow is for siphoning water out of the display tank and into the sump. the sump is for putting your equipment in( skimmer, heater, reactors, ect.) and yes and no for the fuge the main thing for a fuge is a biological type of filtering that normaly you would put macro alge a deep sand bed, ect. in there and it isnt aggressive fish you put in there it is fish that been bad in the display tank you put in there.

I have a 15 gallon sump on my 25 gallon Quarantine tank. its all about the available space. The sump is a place to put carbon to make the water clearer and put a heater so the heat is dispursed better in the display tank. You can throw your skimmer, or whatever else you plan on using in there as well where it is out of sight. End result is a clean looking display and an easy way to maintain it.
